Thank you Melinda for an awesome and inspiring post!

My mind raced as I read, and while I don't yet have to contend with the clutter that challenges you, I'm inspired to look for alternatives other than the "Island of Misfit Toys."

When wee Finn Gunn outgrows his present playthings, we have womens' shelters (woefully misnamed because many are really family shelters) that could benefit from our hand-me-downs. We have families not ten blocks from our own house who we could talk with and befriend with gifts. An often forgotten group is our local YMCA, which is IMHO unequaled in its efforts to give young people a safe and happy place to play and learn.

We have myriad families in second- and third-world countries who can bring joy to their little ones with a little help from some very great charitable organizations. This, of course is top-of-mind for most Americans now only in the wake of the gargantuan tragedy in Haiti. But the need is omnipresent.

Thank you, thank you, thank you Melinda, for a wonderful post.

Be well, do good, go get 'em.

Great post, Doug.

Huffington Post just listed the 15 toys not to buy:

Also, this is one not to buy is a classic, although I want it! The reviews on Amazon are great -
Playmobil Security Check Point

I was on bedrest in the hospital for a little over a week with my daughter. I ended up having a roommate for most of my stay. A roomate in the hospital could end up being a NOT so good situation... Luckily, my roommate and I became fast friends and got each other through what was a really scarey and stressful time. Diane has been one of my best friends now for the past 2 and a half years and I am so thankful to have met her!

I was on bedrest with both pregnancies. The second was the worst- close to three months. I found an organization that paired me up with a woman who had been in a similar situation to me and we corresponded via email and the phone. She was my lifesaver!
My laptop was also a HUGE lifesaver for me. I kept myself as entertained as possible with reading, tv, and the internet.

People talk about wanting to be on bedrest and getting to take a break before the baby comes. Yeah, two days, maybe three, was enough for me! After close to three months I was going crazy!

GOOD LUCK! I just kept telling myself a healthy baby and a healthy me was more important than any boredom I may have had!!

Robyn,

Think you are a smart mommy for having your dd's ears pierced now. She'll thank you later!

Don't hesitate to write me an e-mail for our ped's suggestions and follow your heart and intuition about having your dd's ears pierced soon.

If your uncertain how she'd look with earrings, then hold up a pair of your studs to her ears. Warning: She want to have them pierced ASAP.

Hi Amy,

Thank you so much for your reply! I will definitely email you for the ped's suggestions. Never really thought that I'd made up my mind, but there is an element of truth to it all. One of the biggest tips we're given as new moms is to listen to all advice, but always follow your instincts. Thank you for reminding me of that! Looks like "When" might be soon!

Thanks again,
Robyn

I know a lot of people have strong feelings when to pierce a child's ear. "Let them decide" is being replaced by parental decision when mommy intuition knows, "earlier is better" from either personal or friend's experiences of unpleasant childhood ear piercing. I think it just depends on your own personal choice whether or not you wish your baby or little girl to have pierced ears.

Some feel perceived gender of their child is important while others find it a cultural tradition where all infant girls have pierced ears.

We had a 2 yr old and I wanted her ears pierced after seeing other babies and little girls with pretty earrings, so I asked our ped. She encouraged me to go ahead and pierce her ears especially when mommy can care for them.

I'd say if your're thinking about it now, then your mommy intuition is telling you now is a good time and I'd follow your heart. If you'd like our ped's suggestions for moms having their little girls ears pierced, write me an e-mail.

Good luck with your decision, but secretly, I think you've already made it and it is not a matter of if she'll have them done, but when.
